What to see in Marrakech – Guide to Marrakech!

This was my second time in Marrakech, and still there was so much to do! I’ll be telling you about what to see in Marrakech! Be prepared for a bit of chaos, bustling streets but beauty all around. The orange buildings of the medina, the beautiful riads, better than any hotel I’ve stayed at, and of course the incredible colours from all the tiles everywhere. I want to show you some of my favourite places in Marrakech that are a must see while you are there! When I went in November, one British pound was equal to about 12  Moroccan Dirham, to give you an idea of how much entry costs to some of these places. I won’t put the price on everything though, as it all seemed to have changed from my previous visit, so it might change again!

The Palaces

Bahia Palace

The name means brilliance, and it really is stunning. Wander through the different rooms and gardens and experience this 19th century palace, which is in perfect condition. Be sure to look up as you go around as the ceilings are so intricate.

El Badi Palace

This palace is only a 5 minute walk from Bahia Palace so I would recommend doing both in one day once you are there. Both are in the southern area of the medina. El Badi is more of a ruin than a palace nowadays, but still a must see. Also has a great viewpoint over the city if you climb up, where you can hear the call to prayer from all the mosques around.

What to see in Marrakech – what else

Koutoubia Mosque

The whole square around Koutoubia mosque is really beautiful. There are people selling their handicrafts, small market stalls with fresh fruit and a lovely park just adjacent.

Main Square – Jemaa El Fna

The Koutoubia mosque is also right next to the main square – Jemaa El Fna. Absolute chaos here in the evening, but worth a look. Best way to see everything is to have dinner in one of the rooftop restaurants and sit in peace and watch the madness below. It is a fairly calm market place during the day. However, at night, there are hundreds of stalls, snake charmers, dancers and people with monkeys who will try and harass you for a photo! This one of the most fun places for shopping in Morocco, there are so many amazing things to buy!

Le Jardin Majorelle

This is an oasis in the middle of busy Marrakesh. A bit further out from the medina, so I would recommend getting a taxi, or it’s a bit of a walk back to the main square. However, make sure to go as early as you can, as queues start to form early on and you have to wander around with a lot of other people. It is a botanical garden, and perfect if you are a cactus lover like me. Yves Saint Laurent took over this garden, and there is the Yves Saint Laurent museum next door.  I think it was 70 Dirham entry.

Le Riad Yasmine

I would recommend going here for lunch, if you are not staying here, to see the gorgeous design and also the view from the rooftop. Just stunning for photos. I had a meatball tagine with cous cous and plenty of mint tea, just divine. Also did not break the bank as I expected, as it’s such a popular place. I couldn’t believe that we were the only ones there at lunch time!

Jardin Secret

Recently renovated, the architecture and gardens here are just beautiful. You can also pay a bit extra to go to the top of one of the towers on a guided tour, which is very interesting. And of course a great view from the top. It is also a nice spot for lunch. Best crème brulee I’ve had!

Ben Youssef Mosque

From my last trip to Marrakesh in 2017! Unfortunately, the Ben Youssef mosque was being restored November 2018, but if it’s open when you go, be sure to go inside.

There are bikes coming at speed everywhere, so be sure to walk on the right side when you are in the Medina!
